Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

Bleeding Cool got some leaks from the Spidey portion of the FCBD Spider-Man/Ultimate Universe comic.

Sooo, Spider-Man gets attacked by FNaF clones...who want to relay a message to Peter? Maybe the Living Brain?

Going from 6160 Peter and MJ going out on an adult couples' dinner with Harry and Gwen to 616 Peter taking his newest date to fucking Chuck-E-Cheese (and than immediately blowing it for Spider-Man reasons) is... something. It's almost like they're actively playing into the accusations that they've turned Peter into a stunted Manchild.

Nah, I bet this is them still doubling down on "Manchild Peter = infinite money" until the bitter end. If USM spurs enough attention (or continues the rate of its attention-spurning), they'd probably have to be forced out the Spider-Office maybe.

In a massive win for quality Parker, there's A cameo from 90s animated Spider-Man in X-Men 97 today.

So curious but has 6160 Peter told Mary Jane about him now being Spider-man I feel like it is something that he is going to have to do at some point.

I honestly hope, for the sake of subversion, that this all turns into a They don't know that we know back and forth between the Parkers, like MJ and Richard have worked it out themselves and that Peter and May are just terrible at keeping the secret

ROFL, Iron Man this week just stuck it to Wells' run, Sandman was spending time in a regular prison with Living Lazer and has been busted out by Rhodes. He was nowhere near Ravencroft

Don't they have editors anymore?

Do they actually do anything or just think of new ways to make Spider-Man quote unquote relatable and quote unquote miserable

[up]The Spidey comic is quickly turning into the black sheep at Marvel with how terrible editorial is about it and the insistence on their bullshit. What's happening there is barely acknowledged by everyone else and when it is acknowledged, it's usually in a Armed with Canon "we're writing around this bullshit" way that tries to avoid actually talking about the Wells-Lowe run's events. More and more writers have openly talked about how no actually decent writers want to work on the book because of the bullshit attached to it. Stuff like Hickman's Ultimate flagrantly shit on it. It's legit sad.

I remember that one Daredevil event had to hastily write around the fact that Ben was the main Spidey for a bit.

And the current office is too prideful and on some strong nostalgia to admit they were wrong about nearly everything since about 2008.

[up][up]while that is annoying, it reminds me of the fact that Ben as Spider-Man is the whole reason Mysterio tried to kill Daredevil in Guardian Devil. People just know when Peter's not under the mask. Which, while I love Superior Spider-Man (2013), should not have made it as far as it did cause his friends and family should have easily figured out it’s not him.

[up]One of the biggest issues with Superior the main thing that holds it back so much is that it requires MASSIVE amounts of Idiot Plot to keep going past, like, four or five issues at best. It's a single five-issue arc stretched out into a whole ongoing status quo that Slott seemed to think he could keep going forever and only dropped because of editorial fiat to synergy with the Andrew Garfield movies.

It's been a while, but from what I remember, in Superior they only tested to see if he was a Skrull but nothing else, which is how Otto snuck past.

[up][up] IIRC, the Avengers were about to give Spidey a thorough brain scan to see what had been wrong with him lately (and which would likely have exposed Otto's presence and Peter's death to them, had he been subjected to it), only for Otto to angrily storm out and ditch the team altogether. Spidey didn't rejoin the Avengers until after Peter got his body back, during the Goblin Nation crisis, with the explanation coming to the team shortly after it was over.

Spider-Man 2099 just accepts the situation immediately when he’s told, as that is exactly the stupid kind of thing that happens to Spider-Man.

Didn't Otto bonding to Venom also throw off suspicion?

Like Superior Venom threw hands with the Avengers and after he was defeated Otto used the symbiote as an excuse for why he was acting different, especially before the bonding?

The Avengers didn't really buy it but they had no other excuse so they dropped the issue.

Even without any brainwashing or evil doppelgangers, the Avengers are still used to superheroes suddenly changing their personalities overnight - they just assume there must be a new writer on the book.

At least Al Ewing had fun with it in Mighty Avengers. Where the characters blamed Spidey's personality change on him being into Ayn Rand.

It's funny because people overplay how much Lee-Ditko Spider-Man was inspired by objectivism.

When anyone who read the comic knows that claim is full of shit. There wouldn't even be a "with great power comes great responsibility" line or Spider-Man donating all his precious science equipment to pay for his dying aunt's treatment if it was objectivist.
